Not unrelated to my previous entry, the yearly Bad Sex awards have arrived.
I have to be honest – I read the shortlist excerpts, and to me they read like the usual standard literary writing style that here happens to be directed towards sex, which makes the scenes very awkward (and some of those scenes are meant to be awkward, I have to guess). This is why I am not a literary writer.
The award may be funny in that fodder-for-newspapers way, but it also highlights a level of hypocritism from the mainstream critics, who seem to think that writing can only be good when discussing a topic that they want to read about. Or that writing is only bad when discussing a topic they don’t want to read about. Though, I guess the writing can still be perceived as good – it’s just the SEX that is bad…

Thanks, Wendy. I love this award but somehow I missed it this year. It always brings to my attention some books that are definitely worth reading!
I like all the funny writing awards. I even wrote an article on them for Good Reading magazine (Australia) a few years back. The romance writers’ purple prose award’s pretty good too.
