This is a horrible, horrible, horrible story. Though I don’t read news articles with headlines featuring words like ‘dismembered’, ‘mutilated’ or ‘stuffed into’ so I don’t really know the definition of horrible story. But still. WHY NOT KEEP THE BOOKS YOU ALREADY HAVE, AT LEAST?
Banned Book Week by the American Library Association is coming up, starting 26 September. Hey, here’s a radical idea. If you don’t want your kids to read a certain book, how about employing some f*ing parental care and talking to them about why you want them not to, instead of forcing your views on the other kids using the library and their parents? Shall we all buy the gay penguin book and donate it to our local library to support freedom to read?.
Margaret I DON’T WRITE SCIENCE FICTION OH NO I DO NOT Atwood’s new release The Year of the Flood is about to be released in Australia. It’s about the end of the world. BUT THAT’S NOT SCIENCE FICTION OH NO IT IS NOT.
And here’s a slightly older but good post on why people read SF&F at all.
Dr Horrible hijacked the Emmys. That dastardly super-villain!
This site covers awards of a SF&F nature. The 2009 British Fantasy Awards winners were just announced, list here.

Thanks for including a link to my post! Your comments about Atwood cracked me up, lol. I love her writing, but her “SCIENCE FICTION? ME? NEVER!1@” attitude makes me roll my eyes.
No worries, it’s a great post and far better encapsulates both ‘outsider’ attitudes and eloquent responses to them than I ever could.
Atwood: I know! I don’t know what SF she’s been exposed to but she seems to think it’s squids in space and talking cabbages.
And then SF fans get all “well, you’re not good enough to be in our club anyway, so there” (or, maybe, “this is a boy’s club and girls aren’t allowed anyway”, I do get that vibe sometimes…), when she _is_ a good writer who can bring people around to the idea that not all SF is utter crap…if she would just admit she writes the stuff!
